We all know that a healthy lifestyle can be beneficial in many ways, but it is especially beneficial when it comes to keeping the mind sharp and warding off dementia.
A new study published in JAMA showed that a healthy life consisting of not smoking, moderate alcohol consumption, daily physical activity, and a balanced diet can mitigate the onset of dementia.
- No Smoking
Smoking can cause many health issues including heart disease, lung cancer, stroke, and heart attack. It is best to not smoke at all for a healthy body and mind. It is never too late to quit, so talk to your doctor about the best way to quit smoking to start living a healthier life.
- Moderate Alcohol Consumption
Like most things, alcohol is best in moderation. It is advised in the JAMA study to not drink more than one pint of beer or a glass of wine a day. Excessive drinking can be deadly just like smoking causing liver disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke. If you are looking to cut back or quit drinking, talk to your doctor about the best way to approach this.
- Physical Activity
Physical activity is a big part of a healthy lifestyle. In the study by JAMA, it was found that people who did some sort of physical activity for at least 2.5 hours each week had a greater chance at mitigating dementia. It is a good goal to try to participate in some sort of physical activity for at least 30 minutes each day. You can do this by running, walking, going to the gym, taking a yoga class or whatever method you enjoy. It is also beneficial to work your brain right after you exercise.
A balanced diet is going to help prevent several issues including dementia. It is suggested to make it a habit to eat plenty of vegetables and fruits along with a balanced diet of protein and healthy fats. Sugar can be harmful and to mitigate dementia, it is best to avoid sugar. Also, water consumption is just as important and is advised to stay hydrated.
