Not many movies focus on the joy of growing old. But the summer blockbuster hit, Book Club, is a refreshing change to the big screen. The movie takes us on a journey of four older women as they experience a new side to life after reading a book, showing that growing older can actually be fun.
Book Club stars iconic actresses Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen. It follows the lives of four lifelong friends who partake in a monthly book club. All of the leading ladies are over the age of 60, something that is quite rare in Hollywood movies. But when the next book on their list is the erotic novel, “50 Shades of Grey”, some interesting and outrageous events occur thanks to the choices made by these ladies after reading the book.
It is rare in Hollywood to have a movie centered around older women, especially sexually liberated women. These characters happen to be strong and independent, often overlooked in feature films. The movie directed by Bill Holderman, represents the joys of friendship through the years. Instead of dreading growing old, the movie shows the fun parts of aging and shows us all that there are things to look forward to as we age!
If you are looking for a movie that focuses on mature women and how there is no expiration to sexuality and fun, then Book Club is it. All of the starring ladies have healthy minds, bodies and sex lives. Which is something some think aren’t possible in our golden years. But this movie begs to differ as it takes you on a crazy ride through the lives of these women, which prove that you can have a rich and full life at any age.
Even though the characters have all had their fair share of heartaches, including losing love, marriages and children, they still find the joys in life. As we all know, senior citizens can face many challenges. Book Club shows us that even as we age, we can still experience a joyful, sexual and healthy life. See, getting old doesn’t have to be so bad!
